There is a wide spectrum of emotional 'colours' within us all, existing in different proportions – depending on culture, genetics, and life experiences. Emotional states such as depression or anxiety are to some degree normal mechanisms for regulating our behaviour. These feelings need to be felt and dealt with to achieve acceptance and greater psychological health. Mental health disorders can develop when we lose the ability to regulate and process these emotions. At the same time, they are often accompanied by metabolic and nutritional challenges such as mitochondrial dysfunction, intestinal permeability, neuroinflammation, and nutrient deficiencies.
In this focused webinar, adapted from the popular ‘A Beautiful Mind’ seminar, we explore the clinical mechanisms underpinning emotional regulation, with particular emphasis on low mood, depression & low motivation. Key concepts discussed include the role of the Default Mode Network (DMN) in rumination and anxiety, evidence around mitochondrial dysfunction in depression, a critical examination of the low-serotonin and antidepressant narrative, and nutritional interventions to support our clients’ emotional wellbeing.
