CBD briefing to NNA Members - Caution still required

There are still some questions regarding the safe use of CBD products.

For the following reasons:

  • CBD oil is still classed as a Novel Food i.e. a food that that had not been consumed to any significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997. The Food Standard's Agency last updated its consumer advice on Cannabidiol (CBD) extracts on 31 March 2022 with very little change from their previous update in May 2020. Companies who manufacture products that contain CBD oil still have to obtain authorisation that their product(s) comply with Novel Food regulation requirements in terms of food safety. As of January 2023 only 131 CBD products have been thus 'validated' for use by the Food Standard's Agency

  • The Food Standards Agency still states that based on the information they have they advise consumers to think carefully before taking any CBD products. As a precaution, they recommend that healthy adults do not take more than 70mg a day, unless a doctor agrees more. This is about 28 drops of 5% CBD. The levels given are for an average 70kg adult. They say that this doesn’t mean that these levels are definitely safe, but that the evidence they have suggests adverse health effects could potentially be seen above this amount

  • As a precaution, they do not recommend CBD for people in vulnerable groups, unless under medical direction. These groups include: pregnant and breastfeeding women and anyone who is taking any medication

  • In the light of the still current licensing position our Insurer’s reply remains the same: "We will not make any payment under this Policy for any Claim or Loss that arises from, or in any way relates to, the recommendation, sale, supply, distribution or use of any CBD oil and/or CBD based product unless that product has a valid Home Office Licence permitting its public use in the UK "
